I'm still not over the MBTI thing It's like a damn Onion article "The lady who invented the modern concept of personality tests also, in her spare time, wrote a novel about a whole family who kill themselves because they discover they are tainted by 'Negro blood'"

Personality inventories are essentially just “tell me about yourself by answering a series of questions and then I will summarize what you told me” so sure how the questions are phrased is important but mostly it’s just going to tell you what you believe about yourself regardless

This is what makes me angriest about MBTI Even if you accept everything they say about the categories they put the human race into being valid and useful... MBTI cannot tell you if you ARE an INTJ, only whether YOU THINK you are an INTJ

I have no idea how to start here but... apparently, mbti is horribly misunderstood by most people?like it doesnt actually say youre a logical person. Instead it says that like, for example, you think introvertedly, thus you feel extrovertedly.

And also other shit but apparently theres some kinda function stack and like when you dive deeper into it, it becomes less about personality and more about what sorta tasks are easier for your brain to do.

Which makes every single criticism here not applicable to actual mbti because there actually COULD be a concrete way to test for whether or not certain cognitive functions are easier for a certain person, and I’m pretty sure theyre out there, too.

Sure, but the MBTI everyone uses is based on pure self assessment

Yea it is. Though to be fair, as a disabled person, I feel like self-assessment is a lot less dubious when it comes to your own cognitive abilities. We tend to know what we’re capable of.

Really, the problem is that the mbti everyone uses is a personality quiz and not a cognitive assessment.

Honestly the most fascinating thing abt mbti as a theory is that it can actually be falsifiable in a way thay other personality type systems can’t: There are impossible personality types. There’s a lot of them, actually.

You mean because each of the individual elements is a pair of binary opposites?

Thats one of them. But there’s a LOT of restrictions. So many, that the four-letter thing really only tells you what like. The first two functions are or something like that. Everything else naturally follows from there.
