And so to enforce thematic consistency the Revised edition gave Mage the dark backstory it should've had in the first place to be a WoD game (nuking the High Umbra and killing off the Archmages, stranding all the weaksauce adepts in the mundane world)

Mage just doesn't work for horror imo; my personal opinion is that to make magic practitioners horrifying you need to lean HARD into Mythos/occult coding, which removes the "I AM THE ALMIGHTY WIZARDBRAAAAAAAIIIIIIN" and replaces it with a sense of unease at appeasing alien powers

Look I don't know more than a surface knowledge here, I'm more just talking about like, in general it feels like the way to keep Mages horrific is to make it power which is *not theirs*

Right, in MtAw the splats are "Paths", they represent different ways you awaken into your power, which isn't really framed as coming from "inside you" but as your connection to the Realms Supernal, the Spirit World

And which Realm you awaken into, what form the spirit world and the spirits in it take, is kind of a personality test How do you see the external world, how do you see your relationship to it, what emotional stance constitutes "drawing on your power" for you

So like the Acanthus, the Enchanters, awaken in Faerie, their Path is about being bargained with and toyed with by tricksy pranksters, they see the world as a puzzle Thyrsus are shamans who see a wild untamed nature, Moros are goffic necromancers who see the peace of the grave

The Mastigos' least favorite other Path is the Obrimos, the Theurges, churchy Lawful Good Gryffindor types Their Realm is Heaven, their spirits are celestials (angels or patron gods), their Awakening is a heartbreaking image of a better world that could be

Mastigos, the Warlocks, wake up in Hell, and their spirit guides are monsters and demons Their Awakening is being relentlessly, maliciously tortured, broken by madness and pain until they find the core inside them that refuses to break Their driving emotion is spite

It's really metal Their magic revolves around the summoning and binding of demons You do not ASK the world for power, you do not BARGAIN for power or TRICK the world into giving you power You FIGHT the world, biting and clawing for every inch, and you TAKE it

Demons fucking hate you and they want nothing more but for you to suffer and the more powerful the demon is and the more relevant the demon's power is to your needs the more it wants to personally destroy you

Demons might just be a metaphor for the darkness inside your own heart or they might objectively exist because the universe really is a giant test set up to fuck with you Probably both Cf. the Shadow back in old school Wraith

The part where they talk about the other splats' attitudes is pretty great, like everyone else sees Warlocks as drama queens and is like "Maybe if you had a better attitude and didn't bring in your own hostility and you smiled more the spirits wouldn't treat you so bad"
