Honestly the whole cod-Orientalism of Kuei-jin is less interesting to me than that they exist to fully cover the bases of *Western* vampires Like the idea of the Clans is to give you a way to play every different "kind of vampire", sure

But the whole basic nature of the setting is that it mandates a specific, fairly modern origin story for vampirism (something you're turned into by infection) and not the much older idea that vampires rise from the grave due to their unreconciled sins

Honestly I kinda feel like this is a huge problem with almost ALL the splats of the WoD, you know? In a lot of cases it's attempting to take a fairly specific archetype and create an entire autonomous diverse world out of it.

Vampire is the one that's most like this because it's a really cool and iconic idea The thing about the other gamelines is they actually get a lot less iconic and a lot weirder pretty quickly Like Werewolves don't even occur by being bitten, that's just discarded

Yeah but the thing is that werewolves are also really kinda boring. Like all the *weird* bits around werewolves in both forms of the WoD have, it feels to me, very little to do with the central aesthetic motif of turns-into-furry, bc it's...not a very flexible one.

If you completely drop the idea that lycanthropy is a curse that reveals something dark about your inner nature -- which they did drop because they basically plumbed that well with Vampire -- then you really don't have a "classic werewolf" story at all

Which is fine, whatever It's the same as Mage completely embracing the whole trippy "Postmodern Magick" stuff

Kinda boring, though. A lot of the WoD gamelines just don't strike me as that evocative.

Idk, it's weird that WoD is so determined to make vampires, specifically, the Absolute Worst.

It left very little room to breathe.

*shrug* The Humanity meter and the Beast were an early example of "narrativist" gaming, it's the special sauce that made the game interesting

And it's something they did have to mechanically tighten the screws on over time, like in the first version of the game Golconda wasn't that hard to achieve and it wasn't hard to play it as "Vampions"
