Heh, in FF14 characters who have been dead for literally a *century* are somehow in good enough shape to have their corpses possessed and instantly repurposed with worrying frequency. this feels vaguely like a trope, the whole "graves are always viable" thing.

It feels like a missed opportunity that fewer stories do the whole "whoops, wrong thing we resurrected in the grave" deal.

Switched at rebirth is a pretty fun trope yes

I know you've pointed out it kind of defeats the purpose of the way the Kuei-Jin are written but I really do like how Kalliyan in the mod is like "yeah I OD'ed next to this thot and I came back as the thot"

Yeah it's a uniquely guilt-inducing idea, it's very true to the whole idea that Kuei-jin exist because of karma and ironic punishment and whatnot (as opposed to Kindred just being a kind of infection)

Also a very Fictionmania kind of thing

Honestly the whole cod-Orientalism of Kuei-jin is less interesting to me than that they exist to fully cover the bases of *Western* vampires Like the idea of the Clans is to give you a way to play every different "kind of vampire", sure

But the whole basic nature of the setting is that it mandates a specific, fairly modern origin story for vampirism (something you're turned into by infection) and not the much older idea that vampires rise from the grave due to their unreconciled sins

Honestly I kinda feel like this is a huge problem with almost ALL the splats of the WoD, you know? In a lot of cases it's attempting to take a fairly specific archetype and create an entire autonomous diverse world out of it.

Vampire is the one that's most like this because it's a really cool and iconic idea The thing about the other gamelines is they actually get a lot less iconic and a lot weirder pretty quickly Like Werewolves don't even occur by being bitten, that's just discarded

If you want to play the classic Hammer Horror idea of The Wolfman that is the reason we even have "vampires vs. werewolves" as a thing, you have to play a Gangrel

Yeah the Gangrel immediately became an anachronism White Wolf didn't really know what to do with after the release of 1E Werewolf, because the Gangrel were 1E Vampire's answer to werewolf myths and the heavy crossover between them and vampire myths.
