It is obviously invoked constantly in silly and meaningless ways on the Internet but it is also obviously a real thing that works, as evidenced by the fact that we have an Internet

No it's just saying that the fact that quantum physics is really weird obviously means that some people like to go "Well if it's weird then there's NO RULES AT ALL and anything can be true like the fact that if you pay me $500 I can cure your cancer via energy healing over Skype"

But that doesn't make it not weird, it doesn't prove weirdness is false The weirdest shit in quantum physics has been extremely rigorously proven, over and over, the electronics we use every day would not work if the math was just bullshit

Anyway when it comes the absolute weirdest and most disturbing implications of quantum physics, like a many-worlds multiverse, I've never heard a physicist actually explain to my satisfaction that it is bullshit They usually just say not to think about it

(The philosophical question of a multiverse honestly kind of precedes knowing anything about physics anyway, either that kind of thing makes sense to you or it doesn't, the physics would just be a way of talking about the mechanism)

People find it really really hard to explain a device called the "quantum bomb tester" without invoking a multiverse, because it winds up telling you a result of an event that doesn't happen

"Spirit! Are these shades of things that will be, or things that may be, only?" Hilariously, Continuum RPG turns the whole philosophical question of whether the Copenhagen interpretation or the many-worlds interpretation is more parsimonious into a deadly war

If a guy appears out of nowhere who seems to remember a timeline where Hillary Clinton won the 2016 election with physical evidence on him to prove it, does Occam's Razor say it's more likely he is a spontaneously-generated artifact that is the only real thing about that universe

Or is it more parsimonious to say that that other universe actually exists and he crossed over from there to here The first one seems a lot weirder and more arbitrary Then again, it means you're only adding one magically appearing guy to your world, not a *whole other universe*

I'd say it's easier to accept the acasual existence of an alternate universe than the acausal existence of a person with fabricated memories of such a universe, primarily because the mechanics of person-creation are much better known and plainly contradict this possibility.

**philosopher hat** "this universe is perfectly causally isolated from ours but exists in the same real concrete sense that we do" is a sentence that primarily raises questions about what "exists" means
