This episode is EXTREMELY divisive among people I know, although the people I see who most think it's a moving commentary on trans issues... aren't trans Anyway my take is that the core metaphor they're using is actually worse than the TNG "trans episode" they took it fromhttps://twitter.com/emilyvdw/status/1291511802656722944 …

Like, neither episode is great, but in this respect the TNG episode is clearly better They don't muddle up what they're talking about the way this episode does by throwing two or three Hot Button Issues into one blender

Part of the issue with the Moclans is they're supposed to be a critique of toxic masculinity and homophobia but they do the former by reinforcing gender stereotypes and the latter by playing the very cliche "but what if the oppressed people were the oppressors?" card.

The other problem is half the time the show wants to treat their issues seriously and the other half it's part of a joke.

It was also kind of awkward for them to just decide that circumcision is still a thing in the future and use that to make Mercer into a hypocrite and bring him up short
