Also I'm kind of confused, are you in fact starting with Season 2 and skipping S1 This isn't backstory, this actually happens onscreen, and when it happens the way the story is told is weird but it does constitute a major shift in Klaus' character

From our POV he just vanishes and comes back but when he does he's a markedly different person, and finding out exactly what changed him so much is this big reveal
