Wait so did you just skip Season 1
The show is really tonally weird like that, there's a lot of shocking swerves back and forth, it's Gerard Way's style I guess

Also I'm kind of confused, are you in fact starting with Season 2 and skipping S1 This isn't backstory, this actually happens onscreen, and when it happens the way the story is told is weird but it does constitute a major shift in Klaus' character
-
From our POV he just vanishes and comes back but when he does he's a markedly different person, and finding out exactly what changed him so much is this big reveal

my lukewarm take is that UA is committed to this idea that life is strange, it throws you curveballs, really unexpected things do happen-- and this commitment exists in horrible tension with its other commitment, namely that nothing ever disturb the family status quo too much
-
SPOILERS but in s2 they call back to the big family-dance in s1, except this time it's just vanya, alison, and klaus and like yeah, except that should have been the whole season, the three halfway-decent characters trying to be a found family away from their abusive brothers
