It's a strategy, yes I talk about this all the time - it's worth mythbusting the Rosa Parks case and seeing how the sausage gets made The NAACP played respectability politics with Parks, deliberately choosing her as a plaintiff over other people because of optics

She was middle class, educated, married, no priors They thought her story would play well to white America There was another woman who wanted them to take her case but they ended up turning her down because she was a single mom and their opponents would've used that

It's ugly and it shouldn't be how it works but that's how the game is played The good guys do it and the bad guys do it alike, everyone who wants to maximize their odds does it

No one who has any passing familiarity with how this works would entertain the ridiculous argument that plaintiffs in test cases are some kind of randomly selected demographic sample of people in their movement As though court cases just happen organically

Of course I'm not saying they don't have agency, they obviously do believe in their cause, enough to really commit the actions they ended up going to court over and risk the legal consequences That doesn't make the case not an engineered test case

It's like when people ask me if I think all Black Trump voters are puppets or being bribed and crassly in it just for the money No, I don't think so I think there's plenty of crass exploitation to go around but I feel no need to lean on that as a primary explanation

It's a big world, people are diverse, everyone has the agency to make their own decisions and form their own beliefs, some number of them will always use that agency to be massive shitheads, that's how the world works

I don't lose a lot of sleep over people on Twitter going "I'm an immigrant and I support Trump", "I'm trans and I support JK Rowling", "I'm Asian and I like Netflix's Iron Fist" Whatever, they have a minority opinion that is bad, whoop de doo

They are right wing bigots, and I actually save a lot of time by not particularly caring about the specifics of how they justify being right wing bigots

Yes, they are right wing bigots, and I can tell because they are involved in court cases for the purpose of advancing an agenda of right wing bigotry
