Also, as many poor attempts by writers, directors and actors to criticise things via their work have shown, being a good critic is a seperate skill set to those.

Like have these people ever ordered food they couldn't cook from a restaurant before? Do they magically hold no opinion on it suddenly since they can't do it themselves?

It's sad seeing his descent into entitled old white dude mode. What's funny is that he demonstrates right there how thin-skinned he is by pointing out that writers, actors, etc. earn more than critics. One should think they could ignore the latter, then. Yet he can't.

I think “can” is doing a lot of work in relation to people who get the opportunity to write or direct. Plenty of people are doing those jobs and lack the skill to do it.

Yeah imagine thinking the industry is anything close to a meritocracy Imagine thinking the real industry is more of a meritocracy than the film critic racket

As an artist, I hate this take. I'm personally way too biased towards my own preferences and against my skills to really *see* my art critically. I need people *good at critique* to do that *for* me.

It’s useful to see how another artist chooses to get across their visions, but critics are essential for understanding how things come across to an audience, regardless of intent.

Like, there is something to be said about how often professional critics seem to be out of touch with what the average person seems to think re:movies but... yeah. The ability to critique is a valuable skill which I think ALL artists of any stripe should be taught.

(And I say this as someone who was mercilessly bullied thru my late teen years by "art critics")
