I've seriously thought a lot about Orwell's little story about desperately trying to prove based only on his own firsthand experience that the Earth actually is round, so he can know for a fact he is right about that and not just passing on institutional knowledge

This is obviously kind of a silly fear that we all have to get past just to live our lives, and it's not somehow new to modern society (A medieval English peasant going "France? Psh, has anyone ever SEEN France")
