It wouldn't really be him, though.

If we're assuming Infinity Gauntlet-style reality revision, his soul is as subject to change as anything else.

The point of there being a Soul Gem (that's as necessary to power the Gauntlet as all the others) is that this is a meaningful distinction in the MCU but having the Gauntlet lets you change things at that level too

There's some vague hints the movie gives you as to what this means in practice Like why before he gets it, you'd think the Reality Gem by itself would make Thanos omnipotent but it's not as powerful as you'd think

It's even weirder because going off what we see done with it, the Gauntlet's Reality-warping effects are only temporary without the Soul gem. But honestly so many of the gems are just kinda generic power phlebotinum when used outside of that film.

Without the *Time* gem, surely, although Soul might also play a role sure

The Soul Gem's absence may in fact be why he can't just wish people dead with the Reality Gem and they're clearly still alive and conscious after being turned to stone or whatever

Yeah. But tbf the Gems are themselves transparent macguffins even in their origin story in the comics soooo... can't get too worked up about it.

As someone whose major filmgoing "coming of age" happened with LOTR, I'm a little salty that the next decade was dominated by films where the Items Of Importance were so ill-explained/blah when it was like... The One Ring was so cool, and it meant something.

I think they stopped at "Rule Them All," when that's a poetic flourish representing *real facts* about the ring's power that unfold to us in an organic way. Also LOTR balanced a f*ckton of action with serious emotional payoff better than most movies but, neither here nor there :)

And yet it's still a flawed adaptation! *hiss*
