Once you're contemplating mass murder quibbling about "well at least they will DIE FREE" is cowardice, imo. But that said: This is also making a lot of assumptions which are wholly obsolete once we add reality warping bullshit into the mix, about someone's Platonic self.

Like by that logic you're murdered any time you undergo a significant shift enough in one's priorities, worldview, or opinions.

Hell when you get right down to it if we go full determinism here one has to ask why one considers the result of one set of cultural norms to be the true self :P

After everything he's done I literally have no reason to prefer a Donald Trump who is just some harmless old guy who likes sudoku over a Donald Trump that simply doesn't exist. Even if it weren't death, you don't get to be rewarded for being a bad person by becoming a good one.

It wouldn't really be him, though.

If we're assuming Infinity Gauntlet-style reality revision, his soul is as subject to change as anything else.

The point of there being a Soul Gem (that's as necessary to power the Gauntlet as all the others) is that this is a meaningful distinction in the MCU but having the Gauntlet lets you change things at that level too

There's some vague hints the movie gives you as to what this means in practice Like why before he gets it, you'd think the Reality Gem by itself would make Thanos omnipotent but it's not as powerful as you'd think

The comics made this explicit. The gem in isolation has to be "coaxed" to work and is difficult to control at scale.

Yeah by itself it also has fairly hard limits on what it can do in terms of Time and Space, which are determined by the wielder's own innate Power (this directly comes up in Thor 2) The other Stones in the Gauntlet are there to remove these limits

Just like my headcanon is the Mind Stone is the "AI" necessary to interpret a simple natural language genie wish like the Snap and implement it, rather than relying on the user's own mind to imagine, direct and control the effect
