Arthur Chu Retweeted Dr. Ellie Lockhart. Republic serial villain.

I seriously do not know what you can describe the civil rights movement as of it isn't "shaming people into supporting their politics" It's either that or intimidating people into supporting their politics Pick onehttps://twitter.com/BootlegGirl/status/1290803882189303809 …

Ignoring the bad faith context of the whole debate me bro movement, I've realized as an actual former debate bro that people are not very persuasible and you can't actually win in either of the described scenarios even if true pic.twitter.com/i3mAwZPJiG

It was NOT giving people information or arguments they did not have before That is ridiculous, and insulting "Oh well I just never actually knew oppressing Black people was wrong until now I thought they liked it"

This childish belief that Jim Crow segregation took place entirely within impenetrable opaque domes and regular decent white people just didn't know it was happening Grow up

MLK's marches weren't intended to make people KNOW about racism but to make them CARE To put the image on TV and newspapers and in your face so you couldn't ignore it So you would feel ashamed of it

MLK was explicitly about this This Christian idea of convicting people of sin, of invoking guilt and shame The idea of civil disobedience is to make them beat you up, to force the issue, so that power has to openly reveal the hidden violence that sustains it A "moral crisis"

Malcolm X didn't like that He thought it was quite likely to fail, because white America had no conscience to appeal to, they had no shame Which is why he wanted to move on from there to intimidation

But none of them believed this shit was about *debate*, about *argument* "Oh well I just didn't know Black people are people and segregation made them feel bad you've given me a lot to consider hmm hmm 🤔" Come on

They were literally only shamed because the images went global. That’s it.
