        Australia does the same, but only because 90% of the population lives in or around our capital cities... Also driving 4 hours won't get you out of most states....

        There was talk of this re: Crocodile Dundee and the Australian bushwhacker stereotype That the Australian wilderness is indeed much wilder than the American wilderness but *as a result of this fact* the percentage of outdoorsy rural Australians is far, far lower

        One thing that struck me in China was the rate of urban renew. If you go to a city like Chengdu or Kunming, the "old" apartments date back to the 1950s. Yes, Beijing has its hutongs, but even these are disappearing. My sense is that European cities are much older.
