The Golden Age narrative - things used to be perfect in the past and then they've steadily decayed since then, every generation can't help but be worse than the previous - is very culturally common, many of us instinctively fall back on it in hard times

I just don't think art works like this. there isn't progress in art, though as you say, work of our own day tends to be more meaningful to us. (with some exceptions.)

there isnt progres in "art" cuz art is an umbrela term about thinks that are by definition difuse, but genres and intention do get progress, we learn more and more about making better portraits, or about landscapes, or about the aesthetics of ungliness, etc etc.
