No seriously In-person chitchat doesn't get a complete pass from bosses, but it absolutely gets WAY MORE of one than any other form of not-working that you can do at work Including other forms of talking to people (phone calls, texting)

I don’t mind chitchat, but I am performing way better while working from home because I find other people looking at me distracting.

I can’t focus as well because I’m worried about how I look while performing a task. Do I look like I’m doing it right? Are they scrutinizing my performance? Having to perform the act of working properly is a stress that detracts from my actually getting things done.

You are describing my experience exactly. I liked my office job before quarantine, but I love it now that I’m not expected to interact with other people except to get work done. I’m more productive by A LOT and happier. But the bosses counterproductively insist WFH must end soon.
