This is going to be a very Tumblr neurodivergence take, but -- People in offices waste SO MUCH TIME shooting the shit at their desks about non-work-related topics And that's fine, they should keep doing it But why is that SO DIFFERENT from me watching YouTube on the clockhttps://twitter.com/holly/status/1290581062834442240 …

Bosses still railing against WFH in 2020: "People just sit around in their pants and do nothing all day!" People working all day plus the hours they used to commute: "Are you projecting perchance there, pal?"

No seriously In-person chitchat doesn't get a complete pass from bosses, but it absolutely gets WAY MORE of one than any other form of not-working that you can do at work Including other forms of talking to people (phone calls, texting)

The explicit justification for this is "team-building", that because these are your coworkers it is part of your job to build a relationship with them so you can do your job better I accept that, but it feels like an after-the-fact justification to me

I think it's simpler than that, it's that for most people being in a room with another person and not acknowledging them is fundamentally rude and it feels gross to do that, there's a *need* to at least *try* to interact

It's a workplace accommodation, it makes you comfortable, it's like letting people have snacks and drinks, giving them comfortable seats and paintings on the walls If you were actively directed to "be in a room with a bunch of people but ignore them" it causes active discomfort

I bring this up, in my very Tumblr neurodivergence post way, because this isn't true of me It is very, very easy for me to sit in a room and do something else while you are also sitting there and just ignore you

And over the course of many years I've gathered that this is why a lot of people think I'm a huge asshole I mean, I am a huge asshole, but I don't think this is one of the legitimate reasons

Like I wanna say for neurotypical people a "snub" is a conscious act, one that requires deliberate effort To see someone and ignore them causes you your own level of discomfort and awkwardness and so it's going out of your way to make someone feel bad

And for me it's... not that? Ignoring people is easy, it's my default setting, whether I really like the person or hate them And having to actively perform like I'm not doing that is stressful and hard

As is being told all the time when I was growing up that this is the same thing as the abstract moral question of whether I "care about other people" or "think anyone but myself matters" or "acknowledge that other people exist"

Anyway technology is such a goddamn boon for me You don't even know The fact that it's increasingly normal for everyone to be looking at screens all the time and ignoring each other I get to be a "normal person" in public nowadays

Also there are plenty of "office jobs" I think are great jobs that I wouldn't mind doing but not if I actually have to go to an actual office Maybe quarantine's ruined your life in that respect but I'm different
