Because of the fact that Iron Man was always a second-stringer before the MCU, I don't think people fully appreciate that the Robert Downey Jr version of Tony Stark is something they basically made uphttps://twitter.com/mightygodking/status/1290339919731335176 …

Yeah the details on paper were the same, arrogant billionaire playboy with daddy issues and alcohol issues and commitment issues, etc But the *personality* was absolutely new "Tony Snark"

I mean from my POV it's kind of obvious that their actual most popular character, Spider-Man, was still languishing under Sony's control So they just said "Let's do a movie where Peter Parker is Iron Man instead"

Meanwhile, the Raimi SM films were very successful but that guy wasn't a wisecracker at all, so no one would notice if IM became one.

Exactly! It's this weird saga where Raimi's first impulse was to do a Superman movie but those rights were way, way out of reach, so his version of Peter Parker is really a take on Clark Kent

And those movies are so successful and defining, and the Garfield TASM movies such a failure, that people basically thought he proved "Peter Snarker" only worked in comics and couldn't translate to the screen

And yet the MCU Iron Man movies just ARE THAT CHARACTER transplanted to a different setting in really obvious ways (to me, anyway) Like even their version of Pepper Potts is old school Peter/MJ marriage stuff And those movies conquered the world

Meanwhile the video game and the (Marvel) movies have been making Mary Jane/MJ more like original Gwen Stacy.
