In fact, this is my thing as a fan of Orwell but honestly more of a fan of pre-WWII Orwell than Animal Farm and 1984 Orwell, where you can see the signs of him evolving into Christopher Hitchens Orwell did start thinking like this, and it's an ugly thing to think

It undermines him and it makes him contradict himself Bluntly, it's doublethink, and it's doublethink that Hitchens, who worshiped Orwell, resolved by eventually just becoming a conservative (Fortunately for Orwell the more mundane infection of tuberculosis got him first)

The essay "The Prevention of Literature" all his modern fans like (the minority who've read his other work), the whole rant that the censorship once practiced by the Church and the aristocrats is now coming from inside the house, from the Left It's a big-standard rant now

But moreover it's fucked up that he thought this He was WRONG He wrote this in 1946 and predicted that soon Marxist-Leninist ideology would become dominant among the Western intelligentsia, that you wouldn't be able to say bad things about communism, the USSR or Stalin

That the Left as an institution had won, the Right was already dead and didn't know it, and the great danger was now the revolution being betrayed *In 1946* What the FUCK

All this stuff that still lay in the future -- Korea, Vietnam, COINTELPRO, the Birchers, the Minutemen, Kent State, Watergate The right wing wasn't even close to dead, the conservatives hadn't even gotten started fighting yet

That's a very American perspective, of course, and I'm sure it looked different to Orwell as a British socialist in Atlee's England whose friends were all British socialists and who basically never interacted with Tories except via letters to the editor etc

It was World War II that really messed him up (and, well, that's understandable, it messed up a lot of people) His dislike with fellow leftists really curdled into disgust and hatred after what he saw as the massive backstab of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact

The patriotic middle class Englishman inside of him he'd never been able to fully shake off got awakened again, with him getting all gung-ho volunteering for the Home Guard (while his wife literally worked in the Ministry of Truth, in the Censorship Office of the MOI)

Knowing that Churchill was a Tory imperialist piece of shit but feeling his heart go all aflutter at his speeches anyway Giving himself permission to love England again because for once they had an unambiguous devil as their enemy in the form of Hitler All predictable stuff

To be fair there was a lot of very good reasons to be disgusted with "his fellow leftists," particularly given that at the time international socialist leftist movements were actually hesitating to criticize the USSR on obvious genocide and mass violence.

Like a lot of modern leftists want there to be neat and easy answers about the Cold War and the USSR and don't really reckon with the fact that *yes*, a lot of international leftist movements at the time were transparently Soviet espionage arms, one empire against others.

I don't think this is it, I think he was really soured specifically on Comintern by how it treated POUM. The obsession on "objective truth" in 1984 doesn't make any sense otherwise.
