To be fair there was a lot of very good reasons to be disgusted with "his fellow leftists," particularly given that at the time international socialist leftist movements were actually hesitating to criticize the USSR on obvious genocide and mass violence.

Like a lot of modern leftists want there to be neat and easy answers about the Cold War and the USSR and don't really reckon with the fact that *yes*, a lot of international leftist movements at the time were transparently Soviet espionage arms, one empire against others.

I don't think this is it, I think he was really soured specifically on Comintern by how it treated POUM. The obsession on "objective truth" in 1984 doesn't make any sense otherwise.
