Hm, this strikes me as a couple of things happening. first, The GOPers who love quoting 1984 tend to cherry pick a lot, and *none* of them are old enough to recall the intra-left stuff that was going on then. (That's also true of most readers now anyway)

Second, there is a tendency of right wing folks to project, a lot. I don't know why that is; I haven't seen that manifest the same way among serious left-wing thinkers. YMMV.
