Like I think psychologically they do experience the end of the game as a death, or at least a loss They need a hard endpoint, a way to commit to stopping They need the experience of seeing the persona's social circle grieve and mourn

I also wonder if they also consider it a way to quit their "addiction" cold turkey? Maybe they worry that a slow fade into obscurity would tempt them to bring the character back again, whereas death is final. (Unless it's Lennay Kekua, which, yeah.)

i think it's motivated, but not by the desire to get caught. to do a thorough catfishing you have to get invested in the person, to really be engaged--sort of like a ship--and then that colors your view of how others are engaged.
