SOMETIMES they ARE lying in order to oppress you And sometimes you're just a dumbass Who then becomes an asshole about being a dumbass As Douglas Adams put it, "The universe had not yet taught Tricia the most vital lesson, determining which of these two circumstances applies"

Cf. Douglas Adams being the first one to tell that viral email forward story about Arthur Dent being absolutely furious about the random guy stealing his biscuits right from in front of him as this alpha male dominance flex only to find his own biscuits were under his newspaper

Every Internet Man thinks they're Winston Smith and it's even worse than thinking they were Galileo or Socrates Jesus Christ Orwell was lucky he died before he could see it, and it's unlucky for us he died after the book was published

Is being Winston Smith something to be desired? Even before the state breaks him, he's hardly an individualistic hero. He's a profoundly ordinary guy who manages to grasp at his humanity for a little while, but mostly he's rather pathetic.

Unsure they’re able to aspire to much more than “protagonist?” really

They are much prouder of just generally being correct than they are of actually doing or accomplishing anything

And more specifically, Winston is a *victim*, and that's more important than being a hero They're full on discourse of the hysteric here, defining themselves by their perceived oppression (while protecting this onto their opponents)

The most unrealistic and honestly narcissistic thing about the novel is that getting Winston for thoughtcrime is apparently so important O'Brien sets up this ridiculously complicated and expensive sting operation just to fuck with him

The fake love nest that was owned by the Thought Police all along, the long con with O'Brien slipping him the book and then going through the rigmarole with the induction into the Brotherhood, the almost literal kick the dog moment in the arrest (they kill the old lady outside)

Like none of it is really logical if you think about it It's this distorted worldview that the purpose of the Party is just to torture dissidents for the sake of doing so (a boot stamping on a human face forever) and therefore there's no limit to what they'll do to hurt Winston

(In terms of critiquing Orwell as an artist and possibly as a human being this lines up with that quote from his friend who said "Self-pity was his dominant emotion")
