Rounding errors don't alter the underlying fundamental math. 2.49+2.49 =4.98 still

Yeah but because you can't see at that level of precision you don't know what those numbers are

It doesn't even need to be that close to 2.5 2 1/3 pretty clearly rounds to two. And two lots of that clearly rounds to five.

If you have a set of scales and you have a thing that shows on the scale that it weighs two, and another if that thing, that also shows on the scale that it weighs two, and you weigh both together you still see that it weighs five. That's the point.

That’s a very inaccurate scale...hopefully nobody is actually using it for anything important!

Now that I think about it I do literally have a broken floor scale to my left that weighs me in at anywhere between 30lbs and 350lbs. Actual weight is around 190, depending on time of day, water intake, etc.

I know because I borrowed a scale recently to double check and had been holding that weight for about a year before mine broke

So I wonder if Arthur would take his instrumentalism far enough to say that all 3 weights are valid in that they were measured with the best available tool at the time

What does "valid" mean here If someone asked you in a court of law under penalty of perjury "How much did you weigh on that date", what other answer could you give them

"I can't answer that question because I have no means of measuring precise enough to fulfill your practical needs" is a fine answer, sure That's kind of the point
