I genuinely think it's time to cancel Orwell Not because he was personally problematic or had problematic politics (though there's an argument for both) But because his Internet fanbase are the most insufferable human beings known to modern science

"Freedom is the freedom to say two plus two make four. If that is granted, all else follows" What a fundamentally obnoxious quote I mean shit Would you let someone talk to you like that in real life If your friend said it to you in your dorm room you'd punch him

It's also a fundamental misunderstanding of what Orwell meant! "2+2=5" is pulled directly from Stalinist propaganda about the first Five Year Plan's objectives being achieved in four. It's not about freedom of expression! At all!https://twitter.com/OneiricCanid/status/1289834711880052740 …

"2+2=5" is not about "authoritarians/totalitarians changing maths" it's about their putting a gun to your head and telling you to get to work or die. Dictatorships don't subtly change shit to get you to obey. They threaten and hurt and kill people till you do what they want.

This is a cool argument but I'm not convinced by it, there seems to be lots of evidence that "2+2=5" is just the meme people used to mean "obvious/absurd untruth" for centuries before Orwell

Wikipedia gives a big list of examples (Samuel Johnson, Lord Byron, Balzac, Hugo, Dostoyevsky)https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2_%2B_2_%3D_5 …

Oh yeah, Stalin using it as propaganda was a riff on that meme. Those posters were saying "look, we made the thing everyone said was obviously impossible actually happen!" So it's a good example of reality-distortion in and of itself whilst also being a direct threat.
