I genuinely think it's time to cancel Orwell Not because he was personally problematic or had problematic politics (though there's an argument for both) But because his Internet fanbase are the most insufferable human beings known to modern science

Yeah he couldn't control what people did with his work or how the political landscape evolved after his death but holy shit If I were him and I came back to life and saw who was stanning my book I'd immediately die again
-
I mean, they like The Prince too

"If an audience runs with it in bad faith, that's their folly" the ghostly visage of Orwell scolded to the Lefties who summoned him. They were satisfied.

I’m not sure that you can blame Orwell because Republicans don’t know how to read. Like I get what you mean, and you have a point, but those guys could find a way to twist anything into right wing propaganda.

Orwell was against Stalinism. It seems likely that 1984 was intended to convey an anti-Soviet message which many might interpret as anti socialist.

Nah, I think La Rochefoucald's maxim hold true here: Hypocrisy is the homage vice pays to virtue: if you right a text denouncing the abuses of an authoritarian elite, would be authoritarians ruler WILL claim it for themselves…
-
It's unavoidable because until they size absolute power, and often even afterward, authoritarians' MO ALWAYS includes pretending to be champions of anti-authoritarianism.

Do you think George Orwell would approve of someone calling his book "objectively, unquestionably totally morally good" Do you think the viewpoint of 1984 is positive toward people who believe things can be "objectively, unquestionably totally morally good"
