I think you’re discounting how much it became about slavery for the Union at the end, especially for a lot of its troops. For the great masses of slaves that joined the Union army, it was absolutely about ending slavery.

And by the end of the war, Lincoln and his administration has absolutely come around to making it a war about ending slavery/ the Lincoln of early 1865 was not the same Lincoln as the man who won in 1860
