I think the reason I lost interest in chess was because after playing it a million times somebody pointed out that the point isn't to ASSASSINATE the enemy king, you have to entrap him, and I was like this game sucks I just want to shoot him with a cannon

The visceral reality of actually shooting things and knocking things over being the key feature that makes this game actually fun and makes it "realistic" on a level above chess or go or whatever More modern tabletop should embrace this

I remember one designer (Alessio Cavatore maybe?) saying he prefers "true line of sight" rules because they force players to crouch and look from model's perspective. I think this is also why I prefer template blast weapons to "no. of hits", even if the template is fiddly
