I think the reason I lost interest in chess was because after playing it a million times somebody pointed out that the point isn't to ASSASSINATE the enemy king, you have to entrap him, and I was like this game sucks I just want to shoot him with a cannon

It's interesting how different standards evolve Like the fighting game community just says absolutely anything goes, including and especially cutting criticisms of other people's skill

But my understanding/experience is that when playing poker, say, talking about and openly reacting to the game during the game is a part of the whole experience and part of the psychological strategy of it all

This is part of why I use it in my teaching. It is much easier to go "Chess is the game of kings, so you treat your opponent with respect" and then take that out into the real world, than the other way around.
