Yeah it's just a circlejerk of Arthur and 40 or so pseudointellectual sycophants like yourself saying obvious things about the technicalities of real world observations as though that has any relevance the the abstract 2, 2 of which always equals 4

It's "the abstract 2" that isn't relevant I mean the point is that we're talking about actual math curricula and the fact that vast numbers of students just don't give a shit about the subject because people like you think yelling "2+2=4!" is somehow revelatory

Considering that this discussion began as a reference to Orwell's nightmare, which doesn't hold a candle to the modern horrors of birdsite, it is the idea of 2 that is what's relevant and not your low-hanging gotchas about the inadequacies of observation

A mathematician telling people to think harder about the truisms they spout is almost the exact diametric inverse of Hitler demanding you repeat a slogan I mean you're literally the one repeating a slogan "TWO PLUS TWO IS FOUR TWO PLUS TWO IS FOUR"

Yeah. We get it. Not-2 and Not-2 equals Not-4. That doesn't change the fact that 2+2 = 4

Yeah but, like So what

Who gives a shit What is the actual purpose of waving around arithmetically true statements, what knowledge do you gain If I actually wanted to know what 2+2 was I could ask Siri

The purpose is that despite the 2 in the saying being an abstract it was meant to be an example of another abstract concept (yeah I know you have trouble with those) of a universally true statement that deranged lunatics will still try to distort.

And the point of the actual mathematician replying to this making fun of it is that this is a pointless, ridiculous thing to get heated about People in the business of defending sacred eternal verities need to get a better hobby (like making fun of those people)

Who gives a shit about "universally true statements" The purpose of saying words is to accomplish some kind of goal, which entirely depends on what you're doing at the moment Mathematicians know this better than anybody

(I'm reminded of John Nash using Greek letters in his papers specifically because he wanted to troll people who thought it was somehow important to avoid using "pi" or "phi" to mean things other than the numerical constants)

π is *commonly* used to denote projection mappings in algebra and topology. Literally everything in mathematics is strictly contextual and this whole thread is people having a tantrum because they’ve gone their whole lives only thinking about one specific context.
