If your precision is in grams, and you measure 2.3 grams, it will be rounded down to 2 grams. If you add 2.3 grams to 2.3 grams, the resulting 4.6 will be rounded up to 5 grams. It's really simple.

Your inadequate and imprecise observations have no bearing on reality

"Inadequate and imprecise observations" are, however, the only thing we have available in order to build the entirety of our scientific understanding of the world we perceive

"The sum of 2 and 2 IS 4" is not refuted by "our 2's might not be exactly 2" If it's not actually 2 then it's sum is of course not actually 4. This does nothing to change the fact that actually-two plus actually-two equals four

The thing is nothing is "actually 2" in the real world, it's impossible

In the photo, 2. Elsewhere, I am unsure. I think this ^ is just everyone arguing semantics at this point.

Yeah it's just a circlejerk of Arthur and 40 or so pseudointellectual sycophants like yourself saying obvious things about the technicalities of real world observations as though that has any relevance the the abstract 2, 2 of which always equals 4

It's "the abstract 2" that isn't relevant I mean the point is that we're talking about actual math curricula and the fact that vast numbers of students just don't give a shit about the subject because people like you think yelling "2+2=4!" is somehow revelatory

Considering that this discussion began as a reference to Orwell's nightmare, which doesn't hold a candle to the modern horrors of birdsite, it is the idea of 2 that is what's relevant and not your low-hanging gotchas about the inadequacies of observation

A mathematician telling people to think harder about the truisms they spout is almost the exact diametric inverse of Hitler demanding you repeat a slogan I mean you're literally the one repeating a slogan "TWO PLUS TWO IS FOUR TWO PLUS TWO IS FOUR"

Yeah. We get it. Not-2 and Not-2 equals Not-4. That doesn't change the fact that 2+2 = 4
