One of the things that I wish didn't happen is that these incredibly simplified models get presented in grade school but there isn't an understanding (teaching?) of how simplified the model is. Science is so profoundly, gloriously complicated.

So we get all these people with an 8th grade understanding of a field (science, math, whatever) who think that their wildly oversimplified model is an accurate understanding of the field. And they flip out at experts when experts challenge their oversimplified model.

Rational Academic. What’s Left of the Sound Left?! Retweeted Richard H. Ebright
Because I tweet anonymously and stay anonymous on Twitter for a reason, allow me to refer you to an expert: https://twitter.com/r_h_ebright/status/1289607846343057410?s=21 … He’s this guy: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_H._Ebright … So, which “expert” are you referring to? A guy who went on Jeopardy?

lol If you want to claim that 8th-grade science is the same as or even in the same ballpark as advanced science, you're going to need more than Richard H. Ebright saying "Arrant nonsense" in a Tweet in a different context.

Here you go, another response, same thread, undeniably on this point: https://twitter.com/R_H_Ebright/status/1289608047174619138?s=20 … So if you're playing the expert game: Ebright or a guy who went on Jeopardy?

I am not, amazingly enough, citing Arthur. And Ebright still isn't saying that 8th-grade science (or any other field) is the same as or even in the same ballpark as advanced science.

But if Ebright has said something along the lines of, "8th-grade science classes are the same as classes in a Ph.D. Microbiology and Molecular Genetics programs," I would be fascinated and do point me to it. I did not find this to be true regarding my own graduate work.

I assure you, quite definitively, his point is that 2 + 2 = 5 = dumb. You're welcome.

That's nice, but you responded to a Tweet where I was talking about the oversimplification of science in school (especially younger grades) and how this leads to problems with non-experts thinking their oversimplified systems are reality, not models.

At this point I'm not really keeping track but to leave you a little gift: 2 +2 = 4.
