Lol it is because I learned what significant figures are in school that I went down a rabbit hole about the philosophy of measurement underlying it as a teen Blew my mind, Roger S Jones' Physics for the Rest of Us, highly recommend it

You realize that in your example you used that 2+2=4 to get 2.2 + 2.4 = 4.6 and then just rounded up to 5 right? Rounding up does not imply 2+2=5

It's possible, but in real life you usually have some reason to do it, and you should be thinking about that reason when implementing your counting method (once the number of people rises past the point of triviality)
