It might be helpful to think poll numbers. If Candidate X is two points ahead with a margin of error of +/-1 and goes up 2 points, they might well be 5 points ahead.

Is this like what a lot of us do in the kitchen? I'd put 2.3 c of batter in a pan than has a 2c fill line but I won't put 2.3c & 2.2c in a pan with a 4c fill line. The former is 2c x 2, the latter is 5c.
