On the contrary, proving 1+1=2 was a massive leap forward in our understanding mathematics as a concept. It also happened in 1910 after we had been just accepting it for thousands of years, and if you reject Russell's axioms it falls apart.

So we should or should not consider it a good thing that we have a shared knowledge of what 2 means?

We have a shared assumption, not knowledge. There's an important distinction.

Definitions can be regarded as knowledge and we have a shared definition. It’s funny to see you play with definitions when (and I’m not conservative) you declare absolutely that “all terrorists are conservative.” Or do you admit that’s an (ill-founded) assumption?

You really are Dunning-Krugering your way through this thread. You are particularly resistant to the observation that shared knowledge of a concept can be incomplete, can evolve, etc.

Asserting D-K is another way to argue. I guess we should seek to evolve a basic, general (and quite universal) understanding of what 2 means in an *everyday context of communication* (my point) then? 2 + 2 = 4 = Dunning Krueger 2 + 2 = 5 = shared knowledge is incomplete.

If you really dont understand the circumstances under which 2+2=5 is a true statement, circumstances that have been thoroughly explained, then you are not cut out for this conversation. Do you or do you not understand?

Are these arguments (mostly focused on rounding) evidence for an evolution of how we fundamentally understand what 2 means? If so, please do cut me out of your conversation.

They are not mostly focused on rounding. The arguments you best have a handle on are the rounding arguments. And that's fine. Most of us aren't mathematicians. When I see mathematicians talk, huge amounts of what they're saying goes over my head. That doesn't mean they're wrong.

The key thing is that "rounding" is not some special case, like it's something we grudgingly allow people to do when they're lazy to save on paper

The question of what it means for a number, a fundamentally abstract and imaginary concept, to represent some quantity in the real physical world is a BIG QUESTION It's an IMPORTANT question, it's a FOUNDATIONAL question if you want to have a practical understanding of math

Maybe he will understand it better if we discuss geometry. What's a point ? A line ? A plane ? They aren't physical entities. Just like numbers, they are an abstraction that let us approximate nature, but nature will always be an imperfect example of ithttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Point%E2%80%93line%E2%80%93plane_postulate …
