It’s like reading the word ‘barf’ and saying ‘but that means ‘snow’ in Farsi! You’re excluding all the Farsi people when you teach it with the English meaning. We need to look at Farsi when learning English.

I remember learning the ancient Aztec number system in primary school, it wasn't the strawman you're making of it (it was spending like one day looking at it) and if you can't deal with that and relate it to the general concept of mathematical abstraction you're a shitty teacher

Learning how to use a simple alternate numeral system like Aztec numerals (or for that matter Roman numerals) is an obvious stepping stone to learning simple algebra If you can't make that connection then you had shitty teachers in fourth grade yourselfpic.twitter.com/FOqK15B4i0

I'm equating learning solid fundamentals in a variety of subjects and skills to having a wider array of choice for career path and educational pursuits. If half of kids graduate and can't do basic math, that's terrible. Sorry kids, you can't be engineers, accountants, architects

Yeah and if some sidebar about teaching you that the Aztec numeral system existed successfully derails all that then you're a shitty teacher and you don't actually know what you're doing when "teaching math"
