Arthur Chu Retweeted James Lindsay, the Donald Trump of Intellectuals

It's amazing how a professional mathematician saying things that any professional mathematician would readily accept as non-controversial gets a bunch of dickhead conservatives screaming and pounding on the tablehttps://twitter.com/ConceptualJames/status/1288957167844962306 …

Kids, never doubt yourself. You can achieve anything, including getting math educators to double, triple, and quadruple down on 2+2=5 so they won't have to admit their political and epistemological views are literally Orwellian. pic.twitter.com/KBDlMbc8N2

Even just an example that everyone is screaming about as logic-chopping and cheating is a good and important example worth thinking about That it's easy to add 2 pounds to 2 pounds and get 5 pounds, if you're using a scale that rounds 2.2 and 2.4 down to 2 and rounds 4.6 up to 5

It's a very "postmodern" thing to bring up about the philosophy of measurement -- all measurement is approximation, all measurement is lies, and the real world cannot be transformed into numbers except via the lie of measurement -- but it's TRUE and it's fucking IMPORTANT

Like I'll throw someone I actually know under the bus here I remember trying to explain the concept of "significant digits" to a kid in HS and hitting this brick wall because she could not grok the idea that just because a machine can give you numbers doesn't mean they're real

"But why would you want to ever throw away numbers and make your measurement less accurate?" "Because the non-significant digits on your calculator are stating a degree of precision that is false, you didn't actually measure that precisely for the numbers you put in"

And it really was like hitting this cognitive wall "One divided by three is 0.333333333, why would you just say it's 0.3, that's wrong" "It's NOT wrong because you only actually have one digit's worth of knowledge, you don't know it was exactly one or three"

This is as "scientific" a principle as it gets It is a VITAL principle to science, it is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to understand this principle in order to do science, in order to take measurements

But if you're trained to believe that mathematical functions give you "the right answers" this becomes a pointless conceptual wall you have to climb over

If you want to start a fight between metrologists and scientists ask them if error counts for passing a test. I.e. if your limit is 100, and you get a result of 99+/-2, does it pass or fail?

... Frick, I think I'd have to say "I actually don't know." I'm not sure whether it passes *or* fails.

Yep yep yep. When I started teaching Physics Recitation, the (supplementary physics stuff) first thing I did every semester was point out how just like a map is not the earth, Physics (and ALL sciences) aren't reality, they are just tools built to describe and make predications.

And knowing WHAT TOOL to use is *vitally important*. A set of calipers can measure things at much finer detail than a tape measurer! But if I use a pair of calipers to try and measure the size of a room, it will A) Be needlessly complicated. B) Probably *wrong*.
