It goes like this. There is a push to bring ‘ethnic studies’ into math curriculum. Like this: https://www.k12.wa.us/sites/default/files/public/socialstudies/pubdocs/Math%20SDS%20ES%20Framework.pdf … This is because ‘conventional’ math is ‘western’. It tends, therefore, oppressive & racist. So goes the argument.

Reminds me of that aboriginal language which has no concept of left and right when it comes to giving directions to a location. It has 4 cardinal compass directions instead. People who speak it are much better in orientation and map use when tested. Because it becomes 2nd nature.

as someone who always has to think twice about left and right since those are relative to your facing at the time this is a bloody eye-opener.

Do Americans not have a social studies or geography class where they study other cultures? If they do, and that class is failing, why use math class to teach this? # finishing school without basic math and eng. literacy is staggering. You'd have them run before they can crawl?

I mean... can you explain to me how cultural competence will help Adults answer a question as simple as this? Or is a kid "fully educated" if they can explain the traditional counting method of Aztecs, but can't read a table and graph?pic.twitter.com/fyldBJPR2p
