A lot of this stuff about "YouTubers' fans abandoning their tired provocative shtick the moment they hit their twenties" reminds me of that thing J. Cole raps about where creators treat very young people as a get-rich-quick scheme and make no effort to have staying power

Musicians diving into really controversial mindless trendy shit to get popular and not having the artistic chops to actually evolve as a creator once their tired act falls out of vogue It's easy to learn a dance but it's a lot harder to learn the discipline OF dance

Like J. Cole, who is very technically proficient as an artist, has had a long, stable career, in contrast to some of these guys who flame up on the enthusiasm of vulgar young fucks with no taste and then fall off a cliff the second their vulgar young fucks become refined adults

I think it's the same for YouTube, or like some of the people who got big on Vine or Snapchat or are now getting big on TikTok It's easy to win the attention of children if you know what you're doing (and have no scruples), but it's harder to keep it beyond their childhoods

This is also where Trey Parker and Matt Stone are at They haven't had any ability to evolve or demonstrated any staying power as artists which is why they can't even dissuade adults of the bad ideas they instilled in them when they were kids

You can blow up on natural talent, absolutely, you can achieve short-term success by exploiting a niche, but actual longevity in any art form is always ultimately a matter of technical prowess and strong classical fundamentals Which most YouTubers simply do not have

Lindsay Ellis got an MFA from the USC School of Cinematic Arts before she started YouTubing, and she's one of the only people from Channel Awesome who had that kind of education, and it really, really shows in hindsight

I was thinking about her specifically because she's the one who made a big thing about how the experience of being on Kickassia/Suburban Knights et al was absolutely hellish for her as somebody who actually has an education re: filmmaking
