I'm not saying all such stories should be banned or they're always without merit but look, that's always the elephant in the room when you do it, and too often people just try to casually walk around the elephant and get to the "good stuff"

one thing i appreciate about THE FEMALE MAN despite its issues is that russ' gender dystopia is an explicitly constructed one. there's no "act of god" that "randomly" transformed the world according to binary sex; rather it's a nightmare that humanity built for itself

in that respect it's actually plausible; it doesn't read like the author just deliberately avoiding the issue by saying "oh this was a completely natural disaster that just randomly fell along these lines ha ha"

There was a time when this was an interesting topic to explore. In the 70s, when women had much less financial freedom and, in some places (aghem, Switzerland) didn't have the right to vote, reimagining gender through this kind of specfic was useful. Now? It just seems gross.
