Weird, the stuff existed before Harry Potter. (Star Trek, Doctor Who, Heck bloody Don Quixote had fan fiction) how did Harry Potter subsume the medium so hard?

Timing and the internet. Fanfic has historically been the domain of the young. When the internet was first really exploding Harry Potter was THE most encompassing fandom bar none in that age group

So sure the people who made a living doing Harry Potter fan films and "wizard rock" albums and reaction videos and shit can be said to have "piggybacked on JKR's success" But she also REALLY CLEARLY piggybacked on them Her empire was built on volunteer labor from fans

I've been writing professionally over 10yrs, much of that also writing/reading ff. I disagree. Among a subset of fans? Yes. Fanfiction as a whole? No. I do agree that authors and creators rely on fans, however. Absolutely. And it's important that fans understand what she is.
