That’s an interesting take, given that freeing the house elves is one of the arcs around a main character, who is explicitly presented as struggling to end slavery, & she is clearly shown as being more morally aware than her preer group.

They don't actually get freed at any point in the story, you understand

On this one point I disagree- Granted, they weren't freed in the books- which is a "realism" point- but Dobby's freedom was definitely a big plot point. Again. Separation of the creation and the creator. In this case, the creator sucks. The creation, that's a matter of debate.

Its pretty middling quality writing largely surviving on the Nostalgia of its fans as children. There's really no good reason to make them remain relevant. There's a lot better out there already.

It's decent writing. Not astoundingly good. I just don't see the point of bringing criticism of the work into criticism of the artist, that's all. Notch, who created Minecraft, is considered by many to be a giant bag of dicks. I still love the game. They're two diff convos.

Because death of the author is pretty irrelevant when said author Still takes in millions from said franchise. But that said I've held this view of her writing long before she revealed herself to publicly be trash

Not really. I've already bought the game- therefore even if he were the current owner, he would never get more of my money. I could still enjoy the books. I don't, bc they're tainted for me now but I don't down on continuing fans.

It's less about your personal spending decisions - most of us have already bought the books and have no reason to rebuy them - and more that if you participate in a public fan community you build hype for the books and encourage other people to buy them

Like we really don't discuss this enough "Fandom" is a free volunteer PR and marketing department for the original creator Authors "tolerate" fanworks because they generate revenue for them, because it's good business - it's better advertising than money could buy

Online fandom, in particular, is OBVIOUSLY why Harry Potter got so goddamn big Not that HP is somehow objectively leaps and bounds better than every other popular children's book series in history It's the one that was popular when the Internet started getting big

It's why the "long tail" of Potter fandom interest was so ridiculously long It's a powerful way to lock in people's interest in a property and keep them from being pulled away to other things - when you're literally part of a community with relationships built on it

I feel like there does end up being a substantial cultural difference from fandom to fandom on this sort of thing? Like, Twilight and Left Behind productive fandoms are both hatedoms you’d have to be unfamiliar with to not realize

Insofar as fandom is a promotional device, it’s a promotional device that works on people who’d have that kind of context, not people with little enough familiarity with fanwork culture to think it’s always complimentary
