This whole conversation jfc it reads like a bunch of Invader Zim aliens pretending badly to be humanpic.twitter.com/BYkqhGcn01
Like unless the twist is that after all the journey spent with the mother protecting her son after he's sought after for being a boy, he's actually really a girl, kind of a gender shaggy dog story, I'm willing to bet this story shouldn't exist
I think a lot of authors see the reactions to bad books like THE POWER and SLEEPING BEAUTIES and think "as long as I acknowledge that this scenario exponentially multiplies the oppression of trans women, I will have triumphed where these authors failed", and actually uhhhh
For one thing—as I'm repeatedly reminding people—Y: THE LAST MAN actually did do this, it acknowledged the death of trans women very, very early on We in the trans community don't actually acknowledge this work as some kind of narrative tour de force
It's kind of a weird lacuna in people's awareness here, because people want oppression to be simple and based on biological essentialism so they can do stories like this and frame them as simple "role reversal"
This 2nd-wave radfem interest in talking about scenarios where prostate cancer kills all the men, or menstruation turns you into a werepanther and gives you superpowers, etc
Like even when they want to explore the "nuance" and frame the event as a tragedy and whatnot the first-order gloss of the story as "empowering" is absolutely necessary for it to get off the ground
What do you think they'd say about all the trans men in this scenario?
They don't really think they're men so they don't really care
