It's going to be impossible to be a Harry Potter fan and not actively be a TERF within a year Not so much because of the people "canceling" Harry Potter so much as the TERFs, who can never stop talking about TERF shit, loudly colonizing the fandom It's fun to watch

Recommend, as a general principle, separating the art from the artist. Artists are flawed humans, who make mistakes, and therefore all of them are objectionable for one reason or another, except - maybe - Bob 'The Happy Painter' Ross.

Okay but I genuinely do not like the Harry Potter books anymore and have been coming to increasingly dislike them for years, for many reasons, only some of which have to do with "politics"

And while the actual literal author is physically alive, "Death of the Author", which is a statement about how to evaluate a work as a critic, has little relevance to the material consequences of engagement I.e. the actual person JK Rowling will get your money from buying stuff

Just wondering : would you feel any different if the book was bought used or a pirated e-book / audiobook?

Ethically I personally don't really like pirating I don't think it's the worst thing in the world, at all, but I avoid participating in it - if I have an objection to paying someone for their work I'd rather just buy consume it, especially when it isn't any kind of necessity

But yeah, sure, you're not really supporting JKR by borrowing her book from the library or whatever, except in very indirect ways I never said don't read it The issue is if you make being a "Potterhead" this public part of your social identity
