Yes. There is literal, honest-to-goodness chattel slavery. Hermione starts an abolitionist movement which gets lol-ed at and then forgotten. The only other freed house elf besides Dobby refuses her wages and becomes an alcoholic because freeing a house elf was seen as punishment.

Dobby horribly mutilates himself whenever he disobeys his overtly racist master and then dies to protect the one person with enough systemic influence to enact actual changes in his people's way of life... And then that person becomes an instrument in that same systemic abuse.

Like it floors me that she took a school who's main attraction was, "we do effortless magic here so why would we need manual labor" and twisted it so instead it's all done by slave labor. The only answer I can suss out is that she felt compelled to bring back house elves--
