JKR's racist tendencies aside, I'm absolutely convinced Goblet of Fire is a rewrite of the first book? It's point for point the same main plot, but with extra creep added in. It's the Deluxe album version of book one...

I remember it was surprisingly insightful of the A Very Potter Musical script to point out the House Cup and the Triwizard Tournament are two variations on the same concept and the latter exists because she "wasted" the former

As in, the big exciting upset of Gryffindor taking the House Cup back from Slytherin had already been done and couldn't really be repeated so she felt the need to escalate it somehow and tie it into the Voldemort plot

I am kind of wishing now in retrospect that the first book had just been a standalone that had not caught on outside of cult fandom, the same way I think it would have been better if there had never been any Pirates of the Carribean sequels.

Like I wonder if in Universe B, people are naively like "I wish she'd written more!" This is also probably the timeline where Gore was president and we didn't have 9/11 or the Iraq War or Donald Trump. Those sweet summer children of Universe B.

And Prince. Dammit, I hate the timeline we are currently in so much.

Like, I am seriously wondering what the giant megafandom would have been that dominated the 00s if it hadn't been Harry Potter. I want to pursue this as a thought experiment.

I know it's already got a terrifying fandom, but I wonder if ATLA would have gotten even more traction ...

I wonder if LOTR would have been even bigger with a Potter Vacuum. I'm wondering what other struggling authors were maybe overlooked because everyone was focused on JK Rowling. Maybe ones that weren't TERFs/bigots.

My theory of history is just that something very similar to Harry Potter written by someone very similar to JKR would've broken out if she somehow didn't exist

Because people needed a Magic Protagonist narrative at the time? Or because that's what the publishers were pushing? Because now I am wondering how much of Potter's popularity was down to promotion.

I mean because Harry Potter was hyped into the stratosphere, especially as Goblet Of Fire dropped. That hype did hit die down until the end of the series.
