(Although making Nagini into an *Asian* human in particular was kinda racist) But no, there's been a steady buildup of annoyance at JKR for a while now, and an ongoing backlash to the books' outsize popularity ("Read another book!" is a meme about it)

For me it started with Goblet of Fire, when Hermione being appalled at the treatment of house elves was treated as a joke, and it just got worse from there as the characters continued to be unlikable people making bad decisions and never changed. Amelia Bloody Rose @AmeliaRoseWriteReplying to @UrsulaV @ZREllorI have a special resentment for the way bookstores slapped "Like Harry Potter? Try these!" onto authors like Tamora Pierce, Diane Duane, Jane Yolen, etc. I know, I know, most kids weren't like me and were new to this, but HOW DARE THEY IMPLY THE GRANDES DAMES ARE CHEAP KNOCKOFFS3 replies 6 retweets 65 likes -
JKR's racist tendencies aside, I'm absolutely convinced Goblet of Fire is a rewrite of the first book? It's point for point the same main plot, but with extra creep added in. It's the Deluxe album version of book one...

I remember it was surprisingly insightful of the A Very Potter Musical script to point out the House Cup and the Triwizard Tournament are two variations on the same concept and the latter exists because she "wasted" the former

As in, the big exciting upset of Gryffindor taking the House Cup back from Slytherin had already been done and couldn't really be repeated so she felt the need to escalate it somehow and tie it into the Voldemort plot

Like, it actively DOES NOT MAKE SENSE that something like the Triwizard Tournament would just let them give Hogwarts two champions and double the chance of winning on a technicality It's EXTREMELY awkward

It's necessary for what she wants to do with Harry vs Cedric but it's such a plot kludge And suddenly you realize the Triwizard Tournament totally actually literally was initially invented as a competition among the Hogwarts Houses

Beauxbatons is just a more-Ravenclaw Ravenclaw Durmstrang is a more-Slytherin Slytherin She didn't invent a more-Hufflepuff Hufflepuff House because she couldn't think of how "more ordinary" would work, and someone needs to be Harry's actual rival that he knows, etc

It's a really, really obvious rewrite And like the stoned college kids who made AVPM stumbled on the obvious truth that if you do the version of this story where all the Champions are Hogwarts students Harry actually knows it works a whole lot better

And the whole "Moody was actually evil the whole time!" is the same as the reveal re Quirrell in book one, yeah.

Yup It's amazing how easy it is to find "redundancies" in those books if, say, you're in the position of having to cram a parody of the series as a whole into a two hour show
