The last really big backlash on JKR before this was over her retconning Nagini into always having been a human, and the one before that was saying that wizards used to poop on the floor before toilets were invented I wouldn't call those "political", exactly

(Although making Nagini into an *Asian* human in particular was kinda racist) But no, there's been a steady buildup of annoyance at JKR for a while now, and an ongoing backlash to the books' outsize popularity ("Read another book!" is a meme about it)

For me it started with Goblet of Fire, when Hermione being appalled at the treatment of house elves was treated as a joke, and it just got worse from there as the characters continued to be unlikable people making bad decisions and never changed. I have a special resentment for the way bookstores slapped "Like Harry Potter? Try these!" onto authors like Tamora Pierce, Diane Duane, Jane Yolen, etc. I know, I know, most kids weren't like me and were new to this, but HOW DARE THEY IMPLY THE GRANDES DAMES ARE CHEAP KNOCKOFFS

Yes, I don't think people appreciate that the backlash to JKR from *within the fantasy genre* is very old and has been there a long time A backlash that exists precisely because most mainstream commentators just ignore the genre community and see Harry Potter as sui generis

I mean this happens all the time Margaret Atwood caught a lot of shit for basically refusing to acknowledge that The Handmaid's Tale does, in fact, "count" as a science fiction book

And that there are many feminist dystopias by women authors like it that were sold as science fiction in stores and never broke out of that box but for various, mostly arbitrary reasons Atwood got that mainstream literary cred

I think this is unfortunately normal - it's how the concept of the "genre ghetto" works, and it's not really Atwood's fault, and it's kind of a waste of time to get mad about it But Rowling really was a particularly bad case

As someone who really benefited from people thinking she somehow invented the concept of "wizard school", who almost certainly did in fact crib ideas from previous "wizard school" books, and yet resolutely pretended on interviews that she'd only ever read Shakespeare and Austen

Pfffft what? She seriously did that? That's like... 16 year old not wanting to admit they cribbed ideas for their fanfics from popular TV shows level of pathetic omg. Like... you heard of 'The Worst Witch' before JK, you aren't fooling anyone.

As I recall the diplomatic way Le Guin responded was "I don't think her books are very similar to mine at all and I don't need the help But it is a fact I wrote the first modern wizard school stories and not her"

"And I don't think she owes me anything but I wish she'd lift up other working writers in her own field more often" (It is very hard to find JKR publicly praising or naming as an influence another author who isn't dead)

it's really important to recognise that these critiques were valid long before rowling became a public TERF. to some extent millennials were not in a position then to address it because we were children and young adults but grappling with it now is absolutely crucial.

100% agreed. I also think it's worth addressing that a lot of PoC were making these points YEAR AND YEARS before it became a mainstream talking point. White people were just ignorant and too in love with their wizard toys.

Rowling’s disinterest in lifting up other voices is a long-running critique. Imagine how much cooler Pottermore, with all those racist backstories of the other “ethnic” wizard schools, could have been if she’d Rick Riordan’d it and hired #ownvoices authors to tell those stories

I as wondering if LeGuin ever said anything. If anything Rowling cribbed a lot from her, and her system of magic isn't even as well thought out. (Granted, LeGuin's magic is a fine metaphor for writing itself, and I don't think Rowling thought in those terms at all)

The fact that we have 8 Harry Potter movies that are faithful to the books and zero Wizard of Earthsea movies that are faithful to the books is the best argument against, "Rowling has talent, that's why she's successful."
