I'm old enough to remember the brief time when "radical feminism" meant "fuck liberal feminism, I don't want more female CEOs, I don't want there to be ANY CEOs" and not just "fuck trans people".

That's more like Marxist feminism (which back in the day was specifically a separate tradition from "radical feminism")

I guess it's worth reiterating that the colloquial use of "radical" to just mean "extreme" and "passionate" isn't really accurate I mean, that's sort of implied by the actual definition of "radical" and it's how many use it but it's not really what it means

"Radical" comes from the Latin word for "root", "radical feminism" is saying you think the problem with the way men and women relate to each other goes all the way down to the bottom, it's not a superficial problem where there's some bad laws to change

And, like, phrased very broadly like that, I think most of us would agree with that, I certainly do But "radical feminist theory" does repeatedly keep bumping up against transphobia when asked to define what you mean by that

Despite the best efforts of "TIRFs" to fight against it, it really does seem like it's a majority opinion these days from self-IDed "radfems" and everyone else that to be "radical" means to say "All of this oppression can be explained by the fact of penises and vaginas"

(More diplomatically I think it's fair to say that "radical feminist theory" is pretty all-in on the idea that it's all about reproduction, that patriarchy is the logical result of the way having babies works And I don't even disagree with that, I think it's a useful framing)

(I just disagree with the dogmatic and hardline way these people apply it, and specifically the way they apply it that requires hostility toward anyone who seems to complicate or fail to fit into this black-and-white narrative)
