They never actually recommend it themselves, it's always a civilian going "I've started cleaning the outside of my groceries with bleach" and them replying "Well sure you can do that if you think it helps"

They've never had a reported outbreak from people all touching something It's always people gathering together and getting it from other people

And yeah totally it is like 9/11 The logic is "Well cleaning surfaces can't hurt and it might help so why not do it" Just like "Everyone X-raying their shoes can't hurt and it MIGHT stop the next 9/11 so why not do it"

Grocery stores ripping up their floors for a deep cleaning and whatnot I don't think people are touching the floor with their hands very much Mr Safeway

If people somehow inhaling the germs on the floor were a major vector of transmission here then I think we'd have had a different outbreak of various different diseases a lot sooner

I do think that at the VERY beginning, when the focus was on handwashing as much as anything, there was a big concern about fomite transmissions, so that all of this stuff at least vaguely made sense. It's been months since that was current, though.

But it is important to realize and kind of intuitively reach the point of being comfortable that our understanding changes, often quickly, and dramatically, when we're dealing with something like a new viral threat. We will be wrong about things because we're guessing.

Yup. I'm an office janitor and my sanitizing work (and hours) has increased. I think a large part of it comes down to people feeling safe at work, regardless of whether it changes anything at all. Even the execs know this, but they'd rather pay the money to keep the staff happy.

NTM, of course, that deep-cleaning surfaces can and will ravage important bacterial communities and possibly contribute to the rise of superbugs...
